We can be traumatized by a single event or an ongoing situation such as childhood abuse and neglect. Unresolved trauma keeps you stuck in the past. You may feel like you are reliving events that happened years ago or you may suddenly feel small and defenseless, experiencing the same feelings, thoughts and body sensations that you had when the original events occurred. When you feel triggered, you may lash out, have the urge to escape or feel frozen. The fight, flight or freeze response is a natural response to help you survive perceived danger. While you may not be in present danger, when you are suffering from unresolved trauma, you feel and believe that you are in immediate danger. The good news is that therapy can help you resolve trauma and move forward with your life.
